One of the most beneficial things you can do to your home, especially if you have different people in and out of your house is to cleanse it of their energies after they have left to help prevent any negative energies from hanging around and messing up the happy energies that you have pulsating throughout your home.
Learning How to smudge your home is an easy way to clean up any of the residual effects of your previous guests or from any type of negative forces you feel coming into your life.
What is smudging
Smudging has been around for thousands of years and has been used in rituals by native Americans, in ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt as a way to cleanse a space from bad spirits and negative energy.
Smudging is the act of burning plant materials, sage is the popular choice, wafting the smoke, to remove negative energy of yourself, your home, or any space that feels necessary recharging the psychic energy field with positively. Smudging is used when you feel there are unwanted spirits in your home or a negative presence in general.
Some times to consider the need of smudging to help is when you’ve been involved in an argument with someone to release yourself of carrying those feelings with you. Smudging is also beneficial if you are having feelings of depression, despair, resentfulness, anger, or of being just unwell in general health
How to smudge
To start your smudging, light your choice of smudge stick and let it catch fire. Extinguish the fire and let the smoke flow from the stick. Catch the ashes in a bowl or a shell to prevent the ash from making a mess. You can use one large feather or a smudging fan than consists of many feathers to help spread the smoke into hard to reach areas. Be cautious not to fan too much or you can cause the embers to burn out.
I like to always start by smudging myself first so that I feel cleansed enough to continue outward. To cleanse yourself you want to stand facing the east and start by fanning swirls of smoke around your body from head to toe. If there are any areas that have experienced physical, emotion, or spiritual pain, or areas of blockage in your mind or body and imagine the smoke lifting away all the negative thoughts, emotions or energies that are caught up with you.
Walk around your home and let the smoke get everywhere, move clockwise in every room and think loving thoughts. Open up the closets and cabinets, don’t forget behind doors, to make sure you cleanse all spaces thoroughly. Leave the kitchen for last as this is the heart of the home, ensuring that you are opening all cabinets.
This is where you can get a little creative on your part. You can make up your own prayer (or poem) of gratitude, or just talk to the smoke as you are smudging. Say what you want it to do, cleanse yourself and your home of all that’s unwelcome. If there are certain areas that you want focused on, say it.
The power comes from your thoughts and intentions. You have to direct the smoke with your hands, of course, but also with your voice and intentions.
If you feel like you can’t think of anything on your own or if you just need a little guidance you can always look online for lots of ideas on what to say. Find something easy if you are like me and get tongue-tied easily so you can repeat it forming a chant to help you build up your cleaning energies. Here is a simple one that flows nicely:
“Smoke of Air and Fire of Earth,
cleanse and bless this home and hearth.
Drive away all harm and fear,
only good may enter here”.
I also like this one:
“Negative energy may not stay,
I release it and send it on its way.
Negative energy I banish thee,
and is my word so mote it be!”
How’s it Smoking?
One of the things you want to do while you are smudging is to pay attention to the smoke and how it is flowing.
If the area is heavy with negative energy, the smoke will rise in a long thin flow going upward. This is because the smoke is being pushed tight with the denseness of the energy.
As you are cleansing you will notice that the smoke will start to flow in a wider cloud cover because the area is being cleansed, creating more space for the smoke to drift.
Types of smudges
There are plenty of choices of herbs, and some trees, out there to use for smudging. Like I said previously, sage is the most common choice used by many of the craft but you can find choices of items that compliment an area you need focused on and finding the right fuel for the fire (like what I did there) to make it more powerful. Here is a list of some choices out there.
- Cedar: calming, comforting, purifies, protects
- juniper: centering, clarity, cleansing, focus,
- lemongrass: refreshing, communications, channeling,
- mugwort: protection, clairvoyance, prophetic dreams, purification, psychic abilities
- palo santo: clearing negativity, attracts positivity, reestablishes peace and balance
- pine: cleansing, renewal, strengthening
- rosemary: protection, purification, psychic abilities and healing
- sage: cleansing, balance, banish negativity, strengthening
- sweet grass: call for ancestral and spirit helpers, ancient wisdom
You can find blends of these and other items and more in your stores or you can find the individual ingredients to make your own blends. There are tutorials to show you how to roll your own online. I just find it pretty easy to buy them pre-made. To each their own. You can also use the loose leaves and burn them in a fire safe container I.e. a little cauldron, a seashell, a censor just be sure that you are able to carry it and that it won’t get too hot with the embers burning.
As always please use caution when lighting anything on fire, open windows if the smoke is too much or for smaller areas to prevent injury. Do research on any of the items you are burning to make sure there aren’t any side effects from that particular item. Especially if you are pregnant or nursing, have small children or pets.
Go on and clean up that negativity and get ready for the good vibes to flow.
Love and Light,
